Streptococcus pneumoniae is a gram positive bacterium of the pneumococcus family, is grouped in diplococci and rarely forms chains. It is usually found in the nasopharynx, almost exclusively infecting humans. The fact that symptoms or even complications may appear is mainly due to the variety of strains and the condition of the person's immune system.
