Generalities:

It consists of the thinning of the walls of the heart, formed by the myocardial muscle. It occurs most frequently in the left ventricle of the heart, which is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body. As a consequence there is heart failure, lower oxygenation and capacity for physical exertion. Dilated cardiomyopathy can be accompanied by heart valve problems, arrhythmias, cardiac arrest. The condition can be improved by the use of pacemakers, or by heart replacement in severe cases.
Risk factor's:

  • Abuse of alcohol or illicit drugs.
  • Obesity and/or diabetes
  • High blood pressure, atherosclerosis
  • Autoimmune diseases such as Lupus
  • Neuromuscular disorders such as muscular dystrophy
  • Hemochromatosis (excess iron in the body)
